Eggnog French toast recipe, a perfect way to use Christmas or New Year’s leftovers. Also an excellent option for breakfast or dessert.

french toast served on a plate

In my house after the holidays, there is always something left, either in the freezer or the family brings stuff.

So I take advantage and make this breakfast until the bread is finished hahaha. There is only two of us at home, so the bread lasts. Or I just keep the “rosca” in the fridge.

It’s tradition in most houses have “rosca” for the holidays, made with egg, it looks like a braided bread that connects on the endeds.

Today I share with you an easy recipe to make and that uses the leftovers you have at home after all these New Year’s Eve parties and toppings and accompaniments to enjoy them.

    📋 Ingredients for the recipe

To prepare this recipe, you will need: egg bread (“Rosca”) cut into slices, eggnog, medium egg, nutmeg, vanilla, and butter. In the recipe card below, you will have the complete measurements of each of the ingredients.

    ingredients served on plates

As for utensils, we will use a frying pan, a deep plate, and a spatula.

Now that we have all the ingredients and utensils let’s get started.

💡 Tip: You can use any type of bread you have at home. Preferably a couple of days old. I prefer egg bread, which absorbs the mixture better.

📝 How to make the recipe? – Step by Step

Step 1: In the deep plate, add eggnog, nutmeg, egg, and vanilla. Mix everything until everything is combined.

Step 2: Heat the pan over low heat and add the butter so that it melts.

    • Step 1
    • Step 2

Step 3: Pass the bread through the mixture on both sides.  Fry for 3 minutes on each side or until it’s golden brown on both sides. Repeat this process until you finish cooking all the toast slices.

Step 4: Once golden on both sides, remove from the pan, and serve. You can add maple syrup, honey, or more eggnog on top. Enjoy!

Below I leave you serving suggestion.

    Notes

    Substitutions:
    • Eggnog: you can use the one with alcohol if you want. I prefer the non alcoholic version option and you can share it with the children. You can use homemade if you have on hand.
    • Rosca de Pan (Egg Bread): you can use any type of bread you have on hand. It is easy to use the leftover rosca. I recommend using any bread made from egg, as it generates a better consistency and absorbs the mixture better.
    • Spices: if you like almonds, you can add almond essence, and it gives it a delicious flavor. You can add cinnamon powder if you prefer, it is like traditional flavor to french toast.
Toppings and servings suggestions and other tips:
    • You can accompany these French toasts with a cup of coffee and scrambled eggs.
    • If you prefer and have ham or turkey leftover from the holidays, you can make an omelet and serve it with them.
    • You can eat it for dessert if you serve it with vanilla ice cream. This combination is a success you must try.
    • You can use toppings like fruit (banana, strawberries, canned peach), a little powdered sugar, maple syrup, honey, even a bit more eggnog.
    • How to store leftovers? You can store them in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
    • Can I make them in advance? You can cook them in advance one or two days before and reheat them in the pan with a little more butter. If you have an air fryer, you can also heat them there (3-5 minutes at maximum temperature).
